Zumba is a Latin based aerobic — cardio workout that uses high intensity interval training as one of the methods of burning maximum calories. It is a blend of body sculpting movements and easy-to-follow dance steps. The routines feature interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat. The benefits of Zumba are not just physical, but emotional, and mental as well. Add some Latin flavor and international zest into the mix and you’ve got a Zumba® class! Join the party and make new friends!! No prior dance experience needed!
- Make sure to bring a towel & water to class! You will sweat and need to stay hydrated!
- Wear gym/tennis shoes or dance sneakers. Please be careful when wearing track shoes because they limit your ability to move side-to-side.
- Make sure to wear comfortable and breathable workout attire!
- You don’t have to know how to dance. Just let go, follow my lead, and have fun!

Breast Cancer Benefit
They’re about showing support,building awareness and changing lives
one Zumbathon® at a time.

“For each hour I was in Zumba class, it was like I wasn’t sick,” recalls Fran Joyce, who was diagnosed with an invasive form of breast cancer in 2008. “I wore my wig and just prayed it wouldn’t fly off when I was dancing.”
This past summer, Fran—sporting a pink racerback tank fronted by a breast cancer ribbon inscribed with the word “Zumba”—joined 700 instructors and enthusiasts who took to the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, streets for the second annual “Groovin’ for the Cure” breast cancer benefit. Organized by instructor Maria McCalister and co-sponsored by the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team, the event featured an outdoor master class with Zumba creator Beto Perez and a Pirates game, with proceeds donated to the local affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
“This is a true celebration of life, love, Zumba and victory over breast cancer,” says McCalister. “Zumba has the ability to attract exceptional people who offer their very best.”
Despite the summer heat, positive vibes radiated throughout the street as the smiling, sweaty crowd enjoyed the power-packed class. A few breast cancer survivors like Fran got to come up on stage and dance with Beto, who says he considers it his favorite part of the day.
“They may only lead for 30 seconds, but everybody loves it,” he says, “and the atmosphere…I love the energy of this city.”
Groovin’ for the Cure is just one of many events known as “Zumbathons”—opportunities to bring together veterans and newbies in support of a shared cause. To enhance the Zumbathon’s power, the Zumba Fitness home office is concentrating its efforts each year on about 10 chosen causes, such as breast cancer and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), better known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Jonathan Perlman, events director for Zumba Fitness, says these fundraising parties are successful beyond the money raised, because they touch so many people on such a deeply personal level.
“Every company can donate money to the cause, but Zumba changes lives—especially for cancer patients and survivors,” says Perlman. “Some women with breast cancer tell us they are very self-conscious about how they look physically and that Zumba makes them feel sexy and alive. It helps them develop the attitude that they need to fight this tragic disease.”

For “the very beginners” in our town! The GOLD class is a lower-intensity Zumba class for active older adults, de-conditioned participants, other populations that need modifications for success, or for every day folks who feel they ‘just can’t dance’ and are trying Zumba for the 1st time. Zumba Gold will teach you all the Zumba Basic steps and the modifications of these steps. The format includes the same motivating music, but there is no jumping and the movements are choreographed with special attention to protecting the knees and other vulnerable joints. You’ll learn the dance moves and techniques designed to make this class safe, effective, and an absolute blast!
